Butembo Workshop 4-7 September 2006
In order to explore opportunities to integrate the concept of quality of care and quality assurance more clearly into the PBF system, KIT was invited to co-facilitate a regional workshop regrouping the three country teams, their colleagues within the ministries of health and the regional office of HealthNet/ TPO. The workshop aimed to further develop and discuss the PBF system and to exchange experiences. It took place from 4-7 September in Butembo- Nord Kivu, DRC.

Overview of the workshop
The country teams receive various types of support for program implementation such as coaching by the regional consultant, visits by the international PBF expert and by the regional office, opportunities to participate in training and in seminars and regional workshops.  This particular workshop was the second workshop organised at regional level, in which the three country teams meet and discuss with each other. The main objectives of the workshop were to:

  • Review progress in the three intervention areas
  • Discuss integration of mental care in the program activities
  • Support teams to improve and strengthen the conceptual framework for PBF implementation 
  • Enable learning exchange among the three teams.

In total 25 people from country teams, ministries of health and the regional office participated and 3 external consultants: the regional consultant of HealthNet/TPO, an international consultant on PBF and a KIT consultant on Quality Assurance. The workshop lasted for 4 days, of which 2 days were dedicated to further discuss the concept of PBF, more particularly on contracting, costing and the relation between quality of care and PBF, one day on quality of care, including a field visit and one day with a variety of issues, such as mental care, malaria and a discussion on indicators to monitor and evaluate the program. Approaches used during the workshop were mainly interactive and participatory with plenary presentations, followed by group work and discussions.
